Fostering Carers needed for Black and Minority Ethnic Children

Fostering Carers needed for Black and Minority Ethnic Children
We know that Black children are disproportionately represented in our care system. While Black ethnic groups make up 3% of the general population, they make up 7% of the looked after children population. This event is open to anyone to hear experiences of foster carers and fostering teams who are working to find foster carers to care for Black and Minority Ethnic heritage children.
Watch this video to understand more – perhaps your church could show it too?

home for good are working with Wiltshire Churches to
urgently find foster carers for Wiltshire Council.

'home for good' is calling on us (the churches in Wiltshire) to join with them in meeting this need.
Have you considered Fostering before?
Please take a look at this page and the 'home for good' links included below
to find out more about fostering, and the specific and urgent needs in our area.
Not sure? - want to watch the video first and then read this page?

Before the start of the COVID-19 crisis, Wiltshire Council had more than 470 children in their care and were already stretched to meet the need. COVID has only added pressure on finding homes for vulnerable children.
There is significant need now. But there will also be even more need in a few months.

There is a need for people to step forward to be approved as foster carers. The needs in Wiltshire are as follows:
  • Concerns that MASH (multi agency safeguarding hub) in Wilts has been unusually quiet which is worrying.   In other local areas a 1/3 drop in safeguarding reporting but we know the concerns will not have vanished but simply be hidden whilst children are not at school. etc
  • Anticipate a higher level of foster carers to be needed in August/early September 2020 as children become visible – important to act now to recruit
  • Particular need to find foster carers for Chippenham, Calne and Devizes – 36% children have to be placed over 20 miles away from home due to lack of foster carers near where they live.
  • Particular need to find households willing to care for teenagers or sibling groups
  • Wilts needs 100 new foster carers over the next 3 years to cover retirements/deregistration due to change of circumstances, ill health  or age; and because the number of children coming into care seems to rise by approx. 3% a year before COVID-19

If you would like to know more you can respond with no obligation by:
Filling in the form on the Home for Good enquiry webpage
https://www.homeforgood.org.uk/wiltshire-response
and you will be contacted by Home for Good, invited to a call (either a Zoom call or a 1:1 with a member of the Home for Good team) to find out more.
Not sure? - Want to watch the video first?
If after that you feel you want to go further, Home for Good will support you into an assessment and beyond (alongside Wiltshire’s fostering team) to help you decide if becoming a Foster Carer is something you can do.

Filling in the form is not a commitment to actually foster!
Attached here is a paper compiled by Home for Good on the effects of COVID-19 on vulnerable children. It makes for interesting reading about other and possibly hidden effects of COVID-19 on vulnerable children.
